Home » Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are one of the best solutions for teeth that are chipped, stained, crooked or have gaps between them. These dental veneers are most commonly used to create smile makeovers and are a good option for patients that simply want a beautiful smile that is professional in appearance.

Porcelain veneers are a very successful option in many situations where the original tooth has developed poor color, shape or contours. It is also a good choice for fractured teeth, gaps between teeth and in some situations where the tooth position is compromised and there are minor bite-related problems. There are also instances where some stains do not respond well to tooth whitening or bleaching. In these situations, a veneer may be the best option.

Veneers Consultation

Coming into our San Antonio dental clinic for a consultation with our premier Cosmetic Dentist and asking about veneers is the first step in determining if veneers are the right for you or if there are other solutions to be considered. Your dentist will begin with a smile analysis to determine what steps are necessary to achieve the smile you desire. Deciding that porcelain veneers will create the look you want is only one step in the process.

Benefits of Veneers

Veneers are individually sculpted for each patient to be the best fit possible. Typically it is impossible to tell the difference between a veneer and a natural tooth. Due to custom-made veneers being made out of high-tech materials, they resist coffee and tea stains, and cigarette smoke, unlike natural teeth. Unlike crowns, veneers allow your natural teeth to remain largely intact with only a minimal alteration of the tooth to fit the veneer. Veneers can even make the darkest teeth appear bright white.

Porcelain veneers are commonly used to recreate the natural look of teeth. These thin pieces of porcelain are attached to the front of your teeth and provide strength and resilience comparable to natural tooth enamel. Porcelain veneers can correct these common problems:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Gaps and spaces
  • Chipped or cracked teeth
  • Permanently stained teeth
  • Teeth that have worn down
  • Teeth that are too small or too short

The Process

Porcelain veneers consist of thin ceramic layers of porcelain and an adhesive layer. A very small amount of the original tooth enamel is removed, typically less than a millimeter, to create space for the porcelain veneer to fit within the mouth. There is a strong, solid bond created between the original tooth and the porcelain veneer using adhesive resin and a special curing light that hardens the bond. This procedure results in restored natural tooth function and a better overall appearance. We are able to perform this service at our dental clinic in San Antonio.

Minimal Prep Veneers

“No-prep” or minimal preparation veneers don’t require the dentist to remove as much tooth material. Just like regular porcelain veneers, they are bonded to the front surface of your teeth. No-prep veneers can usually be done faster and with less discomfort than traditional veneers. You will be able to discuss with our dentist if minimal preparation or “no-prep” veneers could be a good option for you.

Porcelain Veneer Maintenance

Maintaining porcelain veneers is actually quite simple: Treat them as you would your original teeth, with routine brushing and flossing. What we suggest is using non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste. Although these veneers are very strong, you should avoid harmful habits such as biting your fingernails, chewing ice, and opening beer bottles with your veneers! If you have a habit of grinding or clenching your teeth, our dentist may fit you with a night-time bite guard so you don’t damage your veneers.

Porcelain Veneers

Veneers are thin handcrafted porcelain shields worn on the front of the tooth which improve the appearance of teeth that are chipped, cracked, stained or worn. Veneers are thin as contact lenses, and are an aesthetically pleasing option of closing gaps, lengthening teeth, and providing symmetry to make your smile more natural. Veneers are intended to last for many years without changing color. They are one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in dentistry. Ask your dentist if veneers may be right for you.
