Dr. Dougherty at Rolling Oaks Dental is proud to introduce Invisalign® as part of our Cosmetic Dental Services arsenal! We can help you achieve the perfect smile you have always dreamed of, but have never thought possible. And the best part is, no one will know you’re wearing “braces” except for you!

What is Invisalign?

InvisalignInvisalign is an alternative to wire braces that uses a series of clear aligners (also called trays) to gently move your teeth into their correct position. The aligners are made out of a clear, plastic material which makes them virtually invisible! The trays fit snugly over your teeth so no one will ever know that you’re wearing them.

Invisalign is a wonderful alternative to standard metal braces, done in the comfort of the Rolling Oaks Dental offices, by our very own, specially Invisalign trained, Dr. Dougherty!

How Does Invisalign Work?

Dr. Dougherty is offering a FREE CONSULTATION to begin your beautiful smile transformation! He will discuss your smile goals, and explain the amazingly easy process of obtaining them with Invisalign treatment.

The first step involves doing a 3D scan of your teeth, which is painless and easy. The Align® technology allows him to show you a rendering of what your smile will look like after treatment, even before you start! He’ll also explain the step by step treatment plan designed specifically for you so you will have a good understanding of what to expect.

Once he has a 3D “map” of your teeth, he will complete the process of digitally designing each aligner which will enable your teeth to be put into proper position one aligner at a time. He will then send this information to Invisalign for manufacturing, and once completed, they are delivered back to his office. When you get started with treatment, you will have all of the aligners for the course of your treatment, and will change them out every 10-days to 2-weeks. Each aligner is designed to gently and gradually move your teeth into place until your beautiful smile is complete!

Preparing for Invisalign

First Dr. Dougherty will recommend that you schedule a dental check-up and cleaning before you begin your treatment. Once this is completed, he will apply a few attachments, also known as “bumps” to some of your teeth. These attachments are small, pyramid-shaped bumps made out of a composite resin material to match the color of your teeth. They act as “grips” for the aligners so that they will stay snug to your teeth, and gently move them into place. The material used for the attachments is similar to what is used for fillings and minor dental repairs.

Once you start your treatment with your first aligner, you may feel some slight discomfort as your mouth and teeth adjust to having them in your mouth. This is totally normal, only lasts a few days, and actually confirms that the aligners are doing their job! Most people describe a feeling of slight pressure when changing to a new set of aligners, but this sensation will only last a day or two.

Additionally, it may take a couple of days for your tongue to get used to the aligners, so you may speak with a slight lisp, but this should disappear quickly as well.

Benefits of Invisalign

In addition to being invisible, one of the great things about Invisalign is that your follow-up visits will be fewer than if you had traditional metal braces, since there is no tightening required. You just change out your aligners based on the time period specified by Dr. Dougherty!

With traditional metal braces, you have to take extra steps to maintain your oral hygiene in order to brush and floss around all of the brackets and wires. You are also restricted on what you can eat because you don’t want to bite into anything hard or chewy so as not to damage your braces.

With Invisalign, you won’t have these worries because you remove your aligners before you eat, so there are NO food restrictions! Additionally, you only have to brush and floss your teeth as usual, though we do recommend doing so after eating so that there’s no food particles stuck between your teeth and the aligners to avoid tooth decay.

Caring for Your Aligners

When you take your aligners out to eat, we recommend putting them in the specially designed Invisalign tray for safe-keeping. It’s a common occurrence for people with Invisalign to instead place their trays on a napkin while they eat; unfortunately, we’ve heard too many reports of these folks accidently throwing them away!

We also recommend that you carry a small kit with you consisting of a soft toothbrush for your teeth, as well as an additional soft toothbrush for your aligners so that both can be cleaned after eating. In an absolute pinch, you can rinse your trays with water, but it’s best to softly brush them after eating with an antibacterial soap.

Please do not use toothpaste or any other abrasive or harsh substances to clean your trays as this can scratch them and/or cause discoloration.

When you are at home, and you remove your aligners to brush and floss your teeth, it’s a good idea to soak your trays. You can either use denture cleaner for this, or you can use Invisalign Crystals. This will ensure that your aligners get sanitized at least once per day.

Are You a Candidate for Invisalign?

Many folks think that they aren’t a candidate for Invisalign because their teeth or too crooked or their specific cases are too severe. Invisalign can treat quite a variety of issues, so it’s a good idea to come on in for a free consultation and let Dr. Dougherty give you an exam. There’s absolutely no obligation on your part!

Here is a sample of conditions that can be treated:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Crowded teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Overbite – top front teeth sit over the bottom teeth
  • Underbite – bottom front teeth placement juts out over the top teeth
  • Crossbite – upper and lower jaws do not line up
  • Open bite – Upper front teeth and bottom front teeth don’t meet at all
