I had the great opportunity to be part of a first-time event at the 2016 Texas Meeting: “Yoga Class in the Grotto”. It was held on Friday, May 6, 2016 outside of the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center on a beautiful patio facing the Riverwalk. Registration to the course was free to any one registered for the meeting. The class was designed to be an introduction for beginners but could certainly still be enjoyed by someone with more yoga experience as well.
In the class, I focused on yoga poses that help the most common trouble areas for dental professionals: neck, back, and hands. I explained the benefits of each pose as well as descriptions of how to properly get your body into the pose. My class is based on research showing that yoga can help prevent musculoskeletal disorders, as well as decrease stress and increasing strength and flexibility.
Prior to the event, I made a video on my own YouTube channel to promote the class.
The Texas Meeting staff did an excellent job including information about the class in the meeting program as well as on social media. Several announcements were made at different times to get people interested in attending. Not only did the Texas Meeting staff arrange for yoga mats to be provided to anyone who attended the class, but everyone who came to the class got a coupon for a free smoothie at a local cafe.
I was so excited that the class was so well received and so well attended! It was early in the morning and it was the first time for the event, so no one knew what to expect. It was great news when I found out that registration for the class was completely full.
Everyone that attended the class enjoyed themselves. It was great to meet some of my fellow Texas dental colleagues from all over the state. I’d like to thank Dr. Lisa Masters, chair of the Annual Session Committee for this year’s Texas Meeting, as well as Paula Lerash and Kim Goode for giving me the opportunity and helping to make it a success. I hope that the event becomes part of the tradition of the Texas Meeting for years to come. My next goal for the class is to be able to provide dental CE credit for attending.
I would love the opportunity to take the class to other dental meetings. If you are interested in having a YogaDentist yoga class at your dental meeting, please contact me via our website or on social media.
