Finding Role Models in Dentistry…Online

It’s pretty safe to assume that many of you got involved in dentistry because you have a dentist that you admire. You want to be just like them. Your idea of a successful career and a successful life is partly based on something that you have seen this particular dentist achieve. You’re a goal oriented person, and these are goals you want to achieve, too.

In my last post, I talked a little bit about mentorship and how vital it is for dentistry and for your success in dentistry. One-on-one time with other dentists is essential to getting better. Being part of groups of dentists at various stages of their careers is also tremendously helpful and rewarding.

Needless to say, it’s hard to do this kind of stuff in dental school aside from the relationships you have with your faculty. Toward the end, maybe you’ll have time to start thinking about life afterwards, but those first three years, there’s just no way.  There’s always that wonder, though.  What’s going on in the real world of dentistry?

Fortunately, there’s some really cool dentists all around the country that put up all kinds of information online for you to think about and learn from . Here’s three you should check out this weekend:

Dentistry Blogs

Chris Salierno, The Curious Dentist. This is my favorite dental blog to read regularly. He covers clinical as well as practice management topics and he always has something interesting to say. His delivery is concise and to the point. Most of his posts take only a minute or so to read. Perfect for a little study break. I met him at the ADA New Dentist Conference in Washington, D.C. a few years back and he’s a pretty cool guy.

Scott Leune, Breakaway Practice Seminars. Scott is the man. Many would agree with me in that he’s one of the smartest dentists out there speaking right now. He’s full of great ideas and he’s always thinking about what’s next for dentistry. I used a lot of his ideas to help build my practice, and I’m always excited to hear what he has to say next about building a successful dental practice. His website lets you register for his seminar (highly recommend it), but if you want to kill a few hours or a whole weekend, read his posts on Dentaltown.

Mike the Dental Warrior. I love his writing style. Tons of great advice. He’s got an opinion on many topics in dentistry and I feel like I see eye to eye with him on many things. You feel less like a crazy person when you find other people that think the same way you do.

If you’re aiming for success and excellence in dentistry, pay attention to these doctors. You might not agree with everything they have to say, but it will get you thinking about all of the things you need to be thinking about as a professional in our great profession.
