Our talented cosmetic dental team offers numerous treatments, including:

  • Professional teeth whitening: One of the easiest ways to achieve your dream smile is by using professional teeth whitening. When done professionally, teeth bleaching eliminates unsightly tooth stains to reveal a bright-looking smile. While several teeth whitening methods exist, our office uses KöR® Whitening to eliminate tooth stains with little to no tooth sensitivity.
  • Porcelain veneers: We love porcelain veneers because of their versatility in correcting numerous smile imperfections, including stained, chipped, uneven, and gapped teeth, in just two appointments. Porcelain veneers are also durable and stain-resistant, ensuring your smile keeps looking bright for 10-plus years.
  • Invisalign: We correct misaligned smiles in our office using clear and removable aligners. Many patients love Invisalign because it’s discreet and convenient. Besides, it’s usually faster than traditional braces for most cases when used as directed by Dr. Richard D’Avanzo.
  • Porcelain crowns: A dental crown is a tooth-shaped appliance that covers your entire tooth to enhance its function and appearance. Our office uses porcelain crowns to create a life-looking and fully functioning smile. Like porcelain veneers, porcelain crowns are long-lasting and stain-resistant to help achieve durable aesthetics and oral function.

Whether you want a subtle smile upgrade or a complete makeover, Rolling Oaks Dental can help! For more information about aesthetic dentistry and how it can improve your confidence, please call (210) 880-2229 to schedule an appointment with our team.

The Surprising Truth About Choosing the Right Cosmetic Dentist

The Surprising Truth About Choosing the Right Cosmetic Dentist

How do you pick a cosmetic dentist? There’s a big problem in cosmetic dentistry. What is it? Let’s talk about it. My name is Larry Dougherty. I’ve been a dentist for 16 years, and I call myself a cosmetic dentist. Sometimes I’ve got pictures to prove it, but am I really a cosmetic dentist? Who’s to say? A patient asked me a great question the other day and it went something like this. How do you know who’s a cosmetic dentist? It’s a great question. There’s no official distinction in the United States or designated specialty for cosmetic dentistry, but lots of people put cosmetic dentist or cosmetic dentistry in the title of their practice or they add it to their name. There’s no actual official designation. The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry has some titles and distinctions that are actually very prestigious and highly regarded amongst dentists, but the general public has no knowledge about this.

The American Dental Association has no official distinction with regards to who is a cosmetic dentist versus who isn’t. For example, pediatric dentistry, endodontics, orthodontics, those are all recognized specialties in the profession of dentistry. To get these distinctions, a dentist has to complete dental school, become a general dentist, then successfully complete an accredited residency program before they can call themselves a specialist in their field. Cosmetic dentistry is not like this. It is not a recognized specialty, at least not today. The big problem in cosmetic dentistry today is this. There’s no official distinction amongst dentists. There’s no regulation amongst dentists or the ADA about who can call themselves a cosmetic dentist, and the public gets confused because the absence or presence of the term cosmetic in front of the word dentist means next to nuts. So from a patient’s perspective, what should you do? If you’re looking for a cosmetic dentist, what I told the patient was, the best way to know if you’ve chosen the right dentist is to ask them to show you some photos of their own dentistry that they’ve done on cases that are similar to yours.

If the dentist can produce some quality photos of cases that are extremely similar to yours and show you before and after photos that you were satisfied with, you probably chose the right dentist. If your dentist can have a laboratory produce a mock-up or a trial smile for something you to try in and take photos, that’s a good sign too. If your dentist can create a digital simulation of the proposed changes, that’s a great sign. If your dentist can get some composite material and add it to your teeth to show you the changes and it looks cool, that’s also a great sign. Great cosmetic dentists are by and large, great communicators of what they can do. We live in a digital world, a world where photos are easy to take, and dentistry is easier than ever to document the before and afters. Seeing is believing, and you’ll know you have the right cosmetic dentist for you if they make you feel confident about what they’re doing with visuals to back it up. Most importantly, they should make you feel good about yourself and what you’re doing. So if you get that feeling, you’ve most likely made the right choice.
