Cosmetic DentistryEveryone wants to look good; it helps you to feel good, too!  The impact that even a small change can make on your smile can be amazing. Whether it is teeth whitening, bonding, white-colored fillings, or all-ceramic crowns and veneers, our cosmetic dentists have many options available to make your smile the best that it can be.

Cosmetic dentistry is any dental work that changes or repairs the appearance of your teeth, gums or bite. As the term cosmetic suggests, this type of dentistry focuses on aesthetic changes to your teeth. It’s perfect for adults and teens that are concerned with the color, position, or shape of their teeth. Cosmetic dentistry not only changes the look of your teeth but can also enhance your overall appearance, for a more youthful smile and facial structure. Older patients are often amazed at what some cosmetic procedures can do to eliminate facial wrinkles and fill in your lip line.

Benefits of Cosmetic Dentistry:

  • Better Oral Health: Not only does a fresh and beautiful smile look great, but the practices to maintain your smile promote better oral health. Maintaining good oral hygiene directly affects your overall health, and can actually extend your life!
  • Increased self-esteem: How often have you felt embarrassed because of your smile? Crooked, stained, cracked, or missing teeth can make you avoid social situations, or cover your mouth when laughing or speaking. Wouldn’t it be great to feel good about smiling and laughing again?!
  • Renewed Professional Confidence: In professional life, your appearance matters a lot. First impressions are lasting impressions, so you want to put your best smile on when seeking a job, or embarking on a new career choice. It is also true that cosmetic dentistry helps students boost their confidence when they interview for big and prestigious companies.

Restoring your smile is important, not just for aesthetic reasons and to improve confidence, but also to:

  • Restore your ability to chew properly
  • Restore speech and pronunciation
  • Maintain or enhance the shape of your face
  • Readjust your bite if needed to properly distribute force when you chew
  • Prevent teeth from moving out of their correct position

There are many cosmetic dentistry options for you to choose from depending on what you would like to have done. Rolling Oaks Dental can address any of the following issues and more:

  • Stained or discolored teeth — The enamel that covers the teeth can get stained. The underlying tooth structure (the dentin) also can get yellow over time. Professional, in-office teeth whitening is an option to remove stains and whiten your teeth. Bleaching can also be done at home using molds made by the dentist to fit your mouth.
  • Chips or rough spots — These can be filled with a tooth-colored material called composite resin. This material can be chosen to match the color of your teeth. Once it’s smoothed and polished, it will look virtually the same as the surrounding area.
  • Cavities or cracks — Traditional amalgam fillings may be okay in the back of the mouth. However, most people don’t want to reveal a “metal mouth” when they smile. Also, silver amalgam contains mercury, which can be toxic to the nervous system. An alternative is to use tooth-colored fillings. These fillings are made of a resin material similar to that used to repair chips or cracks. Some white fillings (direct composites) are pressed into the cavity and cured (hardened) with a special high-intensity blue light. Others are made in a laboratory and then cemented in place. These include special composites and porcelain fillings called inlays and Onlays. They cover a larger surface area of the tooth.
  • Uneven teeth — It’s not uncommon for a tooth to be slightly longer or have a different shape than its neighbors. With a procedure called recontouring, we can reshape the tooth so that it’s a better match.
  • Gaps between the teeth — Small gaps can be closed by applying composite material between the teeth. This makes each tooth a little wider than before. For large gaps or other surface flaws, our dentists may recommend veneers. Veneers are permanently bonded to the fronts of the teeth. This gives them an entirely new appearance. Veneers are made from ultra-thin shells of porcelain that are matched to your exact tooth color.
  • Broken or crooked teeth — If a tooth has been badly broken or is structurally weak, you may need a crown. Today, crowns on front teeth are made of tooth-colored porcelain and appear very natural. The crown may be all-porcelain, or, more typically, porcelain with metal inside that fits over the tooth. Both types of crowns offer excellent results. Your choice depends on your bite and what you prefer.
  • Tooth Bonding – The resin comes in a wide variety of shades to match your tooth color. First, your dentist applies and shapes the plastic filling material. Then it is exposed to a special high-intensity blue light. It hardens almost instantly. The resin can be sanded, smoothed, and polished until it closely matches the natural shade and shape of your tooth.

Other Cosmetic Dentistry Procedures Include:

Dental Bridges: A dental bridge is essentially a device that holds a replacement tooth called a dental crown in place over the gap where your natural tooth once rested. The bridge grasps onto teeth that neighbor the gap, becoming a natural anchor while suspending the dental crown, in place.

Dental Implants:  Dental implants are an option to replace missing teeth. An implant is a small titanium cylinder that is placed in the jawbone. Oral surgery is required to place the cylinder in the jaw. The implant will then fuse with the jawbone and form an “artificial root” which will provide structural support as a natural tooth would. Once the implant has fused with the bone, a dental crown is placed over the implant so that it looks exactly like a natural tooth. A dental implant is the only method of dental restoration that not only preserves the natural bone but also stimulates bone growth.

All on 4 Implants: When you are placing a full arch of teeth, you do not need a dental implant for each of the missing teeth. All you need is four strategically placed implants on the top of your mouth, and four on the bottom, to restore your full smile. That’s what is so optimum about the All On 4 technology.

Dentures: A prosthetic device used to replace missing teeth. They are removable for cleaning and usually not worn during sleeping hours. We offer two different types of dentures: full and partial. Full dentures are designed to replace your top and bottom teeth. The top denture is held against the top of your mouth by suction and an adhesive, while the bottom one is horseshoe-shaped and sits over your gums. A partial denture or implant may be used if you are just missing a few teeth.

It’s hard to believe that 2020 is almost over, and what a year it’s been! Our hearts go out to everyone who has been affected by the pandemic. It’s been a tough year for all of us.

In an abundance of caution, and due to government guidelines, we temporarily closed our office (except for dental emergencies) back when COVID-19 began. We have since reopened and are offering all dental services for our patients. It is understandable to have some trepidation about returning to the dentist for your health care needs, but we want to reassure all of our patients that we take your health very seriously, and are going to extreme measures to keep everyone safe.

Because of the pandemic, many of our patients have not come in for their regular routine maintenance throughout the year, or have even let more pressing dental matters wait until things calm down. We also know that a lot of you have not utilized all of your dental insurance benefits which are about to expire at the end of the month.

Regardless of your circumstances, we want you to feel confident in trusting us with your dental needs, and we have implemented the following safety protocols to keep our patients and staff safe as the pandemic continues:

  • We are stringently following all guidelines set forth by the ADA and CDC.
  • We provide a phone screening prior to your appointment date to confirm that our patients are not experiencing any symptoms of illness, and that they haven’t knowingly been exposed to anyone else that is sick.
  • When you arrive for your appointment, we ask that you call us from your vehicle, and someone from our office will come out and screen you again to confirm that you are not exhibiting any symptoms of illness.
  • We will take your temperature and measure your oxygen saturation levels before allowing you to enter the building.
  • We are having all patients complete their paperwork online so that patients don’t come into contact with each other at the front desk area.
  • We require everyone entering the clinic to wear a mask at all times, except during procedures. If you don’t have a mask, we will provide one to you.
  • We are limiting the number of people allowed in the building at any given time to maintain social distancing guidelines.
  • We will take you directly to your treatment room once you enter the office so there is no one in the waiting room.
  • For parents, if you are bringing your child in, we kindly ask that you do not bring any other adults or children with you.
  • Treatment rooms and operatory doors remain closed at all times except for entering or exiting the room.
  • Our providers and staff utilize N95 masks and face shields which are changed out between patients.
  • We have installed plexiglass shields at our front office area to help keep patients and staff safe.
  • In the event that you are required to sign any paperwork, we give you a new pen and allow you to keep it, so that patients aren’t touching the same pen.
  • We provide and ask that you use hand sanitizer as soon as you enter the clinic.
  • We have all patients having dental work completed to rinse their mouths with Peroxyl prior to treatment.

While we realize that these extra precautions can be a hassle, we hope that you realize that we are following these guidelines so that we can continue to service our patients’ dental health needs in an environment that doesn’t put anyone at extra risk.

Maintaining Your Dental Health is Vital to Your Oral and Overall Health

When you don’t come in for your regular maintenance visits, small issues such as minor cavities or gingivitis can quickly escalate into worsening health issues that are both more expensive and more time consuming to handle. The old adage, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” certainly applies to dental care!

Poor oral health can lead to a compromised immune system, and especially in the midst of a pandemic, this is the last thing you want to happen since this can make you more susceptible to infections of all types.

Bacteria can cause plaque to form, and if not removed on a daily basis, it can harden and turn into tarter. This is a much harder substance and can’t be removed by a toothbrush or floss; it requires a professional cleaning to eliminate. What makes tartar particularly dangerous is that it creates a sort of shield over the bacteria, causing it to further inflame and damage the teeth and gums.

Additionally, you may not realize that in addition to good oral health being important for the health of your teeth and gums, it also significantly impacts your overall wellness. If your teeth and gums are unhealthy, the bacteria living in your mouth can travel through your bloodstream to other parts of your body. This can contribute to and even accelerate other types of diseases.

People who are diabetics or have compromised immune systems are particularly vulnerable to exacerbations of health issues when oral health is not properly maintained.

We are Open for ALL of Your Dental Care Needs which include the following services:

  • General Dentistry
  • Routine x-rays and cleanings.
  • Cavities and fillings.
  • Deep cleanings.
  • Extractions.
  • Crowns
  • Veneers
  • Dentures
  • Bridges
  • Dental Implants
  • Four-on-four dental implants.
  • Root canals.
  • Oral surgeries.
  • Invisalign.

We encourage you to maintain your oral health, and address any issues that may pop up. We are here to help keep you healthy! Additionally, we don’t want you to lose any insurance benefits that will be expiring at the end of the month since that is basically money down the drain.

As always, your experience at Rolling Oaks Dental is designed to be effortless and painless from the moment you walk into our clinic until the moment you leave. Our team is friendly, welcoming, and ready to make your visit pleasant.

We are Kid Friendly!

Many children feel scared or uneasy about dental visits, which is why we always treat our younger patients with extra sensitivity and care.

Our friendly and gentle manner will help your child feel at ease with us. Positive dental experiences during childhood can encourage a lifetime of healthy smiles, so we strive to make your child’s visits easy, effective and fun. Our San Antonio Dental Clinic offers a calm and caring environment for your child to get comfortable with his or her early dental treatments.

Fiesta2015

Get ready for Fiesta 2015, San Antonio!

For the second year in a row, Rolling Oaks Dental is participating in the Fiesta medal tradition of San Antonio.

This year, we’ve made the companion piece to last year’s medal, a female sugar skull. The design was so popular last year that we wanted to do another take on it. We’ve been selling them for a few weeks and people are coming from all over town to get them!

It’s creating quite a buzz on Facebook, too, check out the post here.

We are asking for a $5 donation for each medal. All proceeds go to the San Antonio Humane Society. In case you didn’t know, Dr. Ana Paula Ferraz-Dougherty is a spokesperson for the San Antonio Humane Society. We are really passionate about animal rescue and we ask that you help us support this worthy cause.

If you would like to include our 2014 Fiesta medal in your purchase, it’s only an extra $3. If you want to see what it looks like, click here.

Medals can be purchased at our office during regular business hours. If you would like one shipped to you, please include an extra $6 S&H and we will ship them to you anywhere in the US. Simply call our office during regular business hours and tell one of our team members you’re calling about Fiesta medals.  We can take your address, quantity of medals, and credit card information over the phone.

We’re happy to participate in the tradition of Fiesta in the city we call home, San Antonio.  It’s been a lot of fun for our business and our team.  It brings a lot of excitement to our office each year!  We definitely encourage other small businesses to get into it.

Thank you once again to Monarch Trophy Studio for their excellent work and help with the design.  We’re very satisfied and Fiesta medal fans are, too!

Viva Fiesta, San Antonio!

rolling oaks dental fiesta medal

If you’ve never been to Monarch Trophy Studio in San Antonio before, you’re missing out. They have an incredible selection of trophies and plaques. I was in there several months ago getting a trophy engraved for my Fantasy Football league, and they had a Fiesta medal display. Living here since 2010, I’ve become familiar with all of the Fiesta traditions, and I decided it was time for our dental office to have a medal. I wanted to do something creative and I wanted to show our support for a community tradition.

I provided the good people at Monarch Trophy Studio with a rough sketch of what I wanted, and when they sent me the proof I was blown away. It came out awesome! This was back in January 2014, and I had to keep it a secret for months. I’m terrible at keeping secrets, so it was really hard for me to not want to show the design to everyone. When the medal order finally came in, I raced over to Monarch to pick them up and immediately posted a picture of it online.

The pictures I posted went viral. People started liking them and sharing them on social media immediately, and before long the word was out.

I’m glad I bought a lot of them, because they have become quite popular. People are coming from all over town to buy one from us, sometimes people buy seven or eight! We have patients and non-patients coming every day and everyone loves them. Our whole team has gotten really excited about it, too. We’re used to only dental patients walking in the door, so we definitely get a kick out of people coming in here to purchase something like we’re a gift shop!

One of the most exciting things was when our medal was featured on WOA News 4 San Antonio with Albert Flores. Check out the video here:

To everyone that has purchased a medal from us, we’re glad you like it. Thank you for supporting our effort to be a part of this community tradition. It really makes us feel like we belong here and we are a part of what is going on in San Antonio. We’re excited to be a part of the renaissance that is going on here that at the same time embraces the traditions that make our city unique and great.

We are asking for a $5 donation for each pin. 100% of the proceeds from the sales will go to the San Antonio Humane Society, an organization we are proud to support.

Spread the word, we still have them as of this posting!
