San Antonio Dentists at the TAGD Dentist of the Year Gala

Attending the 2014 TAGD Dentist of the Year Gala in Austin, TX.  Had a great time that weekend!

Continuing education in dentistry is something that Dr. Ferraz-Dougherty and I are very passionate about. The great thing about being San Antonio dentists is that there are so many opportunities available to us here. Some people have to travel to other cities to get excellent continuing education experiences, and we are thankful that we don’t have to travel so much. This allows us to spend more time in our practice and more time with our dog, Emma! Ever since we graduated from dental school, we’ve always wanted to know more so that we can provide better service to our patients and get the most out of our career. The Texas State Board of Dental Examiners requires that dentists in Texas take 20 hours per year to maintain a license. We typically earn three to five times that in any given year depending on opportunities that arise. Here’s a few examples of where we spend our time furthering our dental education.

Texas Academy of General Dentistry Being involved in TAGD has really motivated me to achieve and learn as much as I can. TAGD provides top notch courses. I’m typically attending an evening course after hours about once a month. This past year we’ve had a lot of basic courses going over fundamental principles in dentistry. The first time I heard a lecture on how to prepare a tooth for a crown in dental school, I’d never prepared a crown in my life. A year or so after that, I’d prepared a few crowns so I felt like I understood the basics a little better. Now, several years later, when I hear a basic lecture on crown preparation, I understand the basics on a much deeper level and can reflect deeply on whatever I’m currently doing. Constantly revisiting the basics is essential!

Seattle Study Club -It’s a real privledge to be a member of a local Seattle Study Club with many of my colleagues that I truly look up to. I’m kind of short, so I look up to a lot of people, but that’s beside the point! In our study club, we have world class lecturers come in from all over the US to speak to a small group of usually around 25 of us. This intimate setting allows us to dig deep into the details of complex cases and have off the cuff conversations that you can’t normally get when you hear someone speak in front of a large group. The speakers are only a small part of the equation, though. Having a trusted network of colleagues that are some of the best practicitoners in San Antonio has helped me to develop as a professional.

San Antonio District Dental Society -Being involved with the dental society was Ana and I’s first exposure to organized dentistry and continuing education in Texas when we moved to San Antonio. We meet once every other month and have a continuing education class with dinner. These dinners are where I’ve met so many of my friends in dentistry in San Antonio and many of the specialists that I trust with the care of Rolling Oaks Dental’s patients. If we ever refer a patient to a specialty practice, you can rest assured it is a colleague of ours that we trust and communicate with on a regular basis.

Texas Meeting -I’ve served as a speaker host volunteer and had some great continuing education experiences at the Texas Meeting here in San Antonio every year since I moved here. It’s truly a great meeting. Once a year, some of the world’s best speakers in dentistry come to San Antonio and lecture at the convention center downtown. I try to make the most of the meeting every year and learn as much as I can. I especially like hands on courses where I can have another doctor actually show me how to do something instead of just hearing about it in a lecture or reading about it. I find this to be my favorite way to learn.

Lunch and Learns -Lastly, we’re very fortunate that many of the specialists and vendors that we work with come to our office frequently during the year and provide continuing education for our team and for us. That way our whole team can stay current with trends in dentistry and ways that we can serve our patients better without having to leave the office.

These are all of the different avenues that we use to seek out educational opportunities throughout the year. Lunch, dinner, weekends -wow, continuing education is a big part of our lives and our career! The satisfaction that comes with doing great work and doing your absolute best makes the time and effort all worth it.

Get ready for Fiesta 2015, San Antonio!

For the second year in a row, Rolling Oaks Dental is participating in the Fiesta medal tradition of San Antonio.

This year, we’ve made the companion piece to last year’s medal, a female sugar skull. The design was so popular last year that we wanted to do another take on it. We’ve been selling them for a few weeks and people are coming from all over town to get them!

It’s creating quite a buzz on Facebook, too, check out the post here.

We are asking for a $5 donation for each medal. All proceeds go to the San Antonio Humane Society. In case you didn’t know, Dr. Ana Paula Ferraz-Dougherty is a spokesperson for the San Antonio Humane Society. We are really passionate about animal rescue and we ask that you help us support this worthy cause.

If you would like to include our 2014 Fiesta medal in your purchase, it’s only an extra $3. If you want to see what it looks like, click here.

Medals can be purchased at our office during regular business hours. If you would like one shipped to you, please include an extra $6 S&H and we will ship them to you anywhere in the US. Simply call our office during regular business hours and tell one of our team members you’re calling about Fiesta medals.  We can take your address, quantity of medals, and credit card information over the phone.

We’re happy to participate in the tradition of Fiesta in the city we call home, San Antonio.  It’s been a lot of fun for our business and our team.  It brings a lot of excitement to our office each year!  We definitely encourage other small businesses to get into it.

Thank you once again to Monarch Trophy Studio for their excellent work and help with the design.  We’re very satisfied and Fiesta medal fans are, too!

Viva Fiesta, San Antonio!

If you’ve never been to Monarch Trophy Studio in San Antonio before, you’re missing out. They have an incredible selection of trophies and plaques. I was in there several months ago getting a trophy engraved for my Fantasy Football league, and they had a Fiesta medal display. Living here since 2010, I’ve become familiar with all of the Fiesta traditions, and I decided it was time for our dental office to have a medal. I wanted to do something creative and I wanted to show our support for a community tradition.

I provided the good people at Monarch Trophy Studio with a rough sketch of what I wanted, and when they sent me the proof I was blown away. It came out awesome! This was back in January 2014, and I had to keep it a secret for months. I’m terrible at keeping secrets, so it was really hard for me to not want to show the design to everyone. When the medal order finally came in, I raced over to Monarch to pick them up and immediately posted a picture of it online.

The pictures I posted went viral. People started liking them and sharing them on social media immediately, and before long the word was out.

I’m glad I bought a lot of them, because they have become quite popular. People are coming from all over town to buy one from us, sometimes people buy seven or eight! We have patients and non-patients coming every day and everyone loves them. Our whole team has gotten really excited about it, too. We’re used to only dental patients walking in the door, so we definitely get a kick out of people coming in here to purchase something like we’re a gift shop!

One of the most exciting things was when our medal was featured on WOA News 4 San Antonio with Albert Flores. Check out the video here:

To everyone that has purchased a medal from us, we’re glad you like it. Thank you for supporting our effort to be a part of this community tradition. It really makes us feel like we belong here and we are a part of what is going on in San Antonio. We’re excited to be a part of the renaissance that is going on here that at the same time embraces the traditions that make our city unique and great.

We are asking for a $5 donation for each pin. 100% of the proceeds from the sales will go to the San Antonio Humane Society, an organization we are proud to support.

Spread the word, we still have them as of this posting!

Dr. Ana Paula Ferraz-Dougherty, San Antonio Humane Society Ambassador

Did you know that Dr. Ana Paula Ferraz-Dougherty is an Ambassador for the San Antonio Humane Society? They do great work with orphaned animal adoptions, a spay/neuter program, and helping to eliminate the stray animal problem in San Antonio (one of the biggest in the country).

As an Ambassador, Dr. Ferraz will be giving a one hour VIP tour of the facility at 4804 Fredericksburg Road tonight at 6 PM. There is no admission charge, and you will not be asked to make a donation, but advice and feedback are welcome. Tours are on the first and third Wednesday of every month at 6 PM. Be sure to RSVP with an Ambassador or directly to the San Antonio Humane Society.  Help us get the word out!

The tour is an excellent opportunity to see the facility, which is first class. The first time I was there I was incredibly impressed with the cleanliness and organization of the entire place. Everyone that works and volunteers is very friendly and you can tell they truly love animals. If you’re an animal lover, consider taking the tour with Dr. Ferraz-Dougherty to learn more about this great organization in San Antonio! Fun Fact: the San Antonio Humane Society is where we adopted our dog, Emma Rose, the rat terrier/chihuahua mix you see on our website, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram… We love her so much and thank the San Antonio Humane Society for bringing her into our life, she is the best!  By supporting this organization, you are supporting animals all over San Antonio, getting them off the streets, and giving them a second chance to find their forever home.
